Jewels of Thread: The History and Art of Tassels
Tassels have a long and fascinating history in the dectoration of animals, the home and as a part of fashion and costume. This workshop will begin with a lecture about the history of tassels and the myriad of techniques used to make them.
We will then look at the different parts of the tassel and and a variety of the skills required to make the various parts; the head, the skirt and the various cords and loops from which it might be hung.
Examining at different options for constructing and covering the head of a tassel we will then construct elements such as knots, pompons and tufts which can be used to create the skirt. Once all the pieces are assembled we will learn some techniques for making twisted, braided, knotted and knitted cords and different approaches to connecting the pieces.
Over the first two days of the workshop students will complete three tassels which are based on historic examples from the 17th Century. On the final day each student will apply the knowledge learned to designing a tassel of their own.
