Helping Our Alien Friends!

It has been many years since I have taught a workshop for children, but last year when Sue Walker of Yarn Hub (you can check out her website to see the amazing yarns she stocks!) taught a children's weaving course at Sturt Craft Centre's annual Winter school, I saw how much fun it was and how proud all the children were of their creations that I wanted to teach a children's workshop too!

So I began thinking about what we could do and decided that the children could learn screen printing by helping to design new bodies for squashed aliens...because it seemed like a fun thing to do.

Did you know that some nights when you see a shooting star it is actually a spaceship coming through the atmosphere? It looks so bright because there is a lot of pressure around the spaceship as it comes towards the Earth and often the aliens end up squashed, we found 12 squashed aliens in their alien pods; they were all different colours but each had a big silver eye looking up at us.

Squashed aliens in their alien pods...

How could our new alien friends explore the Earth in their squashed state? They needed new bodies so the children interviewed their Alien friends to find out about them so they could design their new bodies.

There were all sorts of Alien friends!

Some were Red, some were Blue... but they all had a big silver eye that could see in every direction.

Some of the Aliens even had Alien Pets! This is Angus Beef TNT's "Pet Bomb"

...and naturally a pizza Alien has a pet doughnut! (Oh to have the imagination of a 6-year-old once again!)

Once the children had designed new bodies for their Alien friends we made Alien X-Rays.

Fudge is very excited about his Alien x-ray and cannot wait to be printed!

We then used the Alien x-rays to print the new bodies onto t-shirts and put them in the Alien incubator so that they became 3D. Then they were ready to go out and explore the Earth.

Mr K's friend Fudge is very happy with his new body and ready to go outside and see the world.

Miss L's friend Purlearl is ready to see and hear everything...

Miss R's friend Violet has a message for us all "always do your best!", she is excited to play basketball on Earth with her pet basketball who is very happy too...woohoo!

Thank you so much to all the children who helped our Alien friends. At the end of the day we had 10 very happy Aliens and 4 alien pets who could go home with the children and meet their families and see how earthlings (and their pets) live.

Thanks too to Tracey Mitchell @Sturt Craft Centre for letting me do this workshop, it really was a lot of fun.

Just remember...next time you see a shooting star there may be a squashed Alien in your garden who needs your help!
